Discover more about Amanohashidate

Amanohashidate, translating to 'bridge to heaven,' is a captivating natural wonder in northern Kyoto Prefecture. This 3.6-kilometer-long sandbar, adorned with approximately 8,000 pine trees, stretches across Miyazu Bay, creating a দৃশ্য that has been celebrated for centuries. Formed by the accumulation of sand and sediment carried by ocean currents and the Noda River, it separates Miyazu Bay from Aso Bay. Steeped in mythology, Amanohashidate is said to have been a ladder used by the deity Izanagi to visit his lover, Izanami. When the ladder fell, it transformed into the sandbar we see today. Viewing Amanohashidate upside down through your legs ('Matanozoki') from Kasamatsu Park or Amanohashidate View Land creates the illusion of a dragon ascending to the sky. Visitors can explore the sandbar on foot or by rental bicycle, discovering shrines like Amanohashidate-jinja and freshwater springs such as Isoshimizu along the way. Sightseeing boats offer another perspective of the bay and connect to attractions like Kasamatsu Park and Nariaiji Temple. The surrounding area also features historical temples and cultural sites, making Amanohashidate a destination that blends natural beauty with rich history.
