Discover more about Awa Sand Pillars

The Awa Sand Pillars are a designated National Natural Monument and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Awa City, Tokushima. These unique formations, also referred to as the Awa no Dochū (Earth Pillars of Awa), are composed of sandstone and gravel hoodoos that have been shaped by the relentless forces of nature over an immense period. Formed over a million years ago, the pillars are a result of the erosion of accumulated soil and gravel layers, uplifted by seismic activity. The Yoshino River once covered this area, depositing layers of ancient gravel and sand that eventually compressed into sandstone. Over time, wind, rain, and earthquakes sculpted these layers into the bizarre and beautiful pillars we see today. The harder gravel layers act as caps, protecting the softer sandstone beneath, leading to the formation of these unusual spires. The Awa Sand Pillars are considered one of the three strangest earthen pillar formations in the world, alongside the Rocky Mountains in the USA and the Tyrol region in Italy. The largest pillar, named Wadakuto, reaches a height of 90 meters, while smaller pillars stand around 10 meters tall. Hiking trails and observation platforms offer visitors various vantage points to appreciate this natural wonder. The pillars are also illuminated at night, creating an otherworldly spectacle.
