Discover more about Higashiyama Kaii Setouchi Art Museum

The Higashiyama Kaii Setouchi Art Museum is a serene haven where art and nature converge. Located on Shamijima, once a small island and now connected to the mainland, the museum offers breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea and the impressive Seto Ohashi Bridge. The museum is dedicated to the works of Higashiyama Kaii (1908-1999), a celebrated Japanese painter known for his tranquil landscape paintings in the Nihonga style. The museum's location is particularly significant as Kaii's grandfather was born on a nearby island. The museum's collection comprises 350 works, primarily landscape prints, donated by Kaii's family. Designed by the acclaimed architect Yoshio Taniguchi, also known for his work on the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the museum building itself is a work of art, seamlessly integrating with the surrounding environment. The gray color of the Seto Ohashi Bridge was even chosen on Kaii's recommendation to harmonize with the scenery. Visitors can immerse themselves in Kaii's art, which captures the ever-changing beauty of forests, mountains, and the sea. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, workshops, and lectures, providing a dynamic space for cultural exchange. After appreciating the art, visitors can stroll through the picturesque grounds, enjoying panoramic views and the calming sounds of nature.
