Discover more about Iya Valley Bridge

The Iya Valley Bridge is one of Japan's three most unusual bridges, offering a unique blend of history, nature, and thrilling adventure. This impressive structure stretches 45 meters across the Iya River, suspended 14 meters above the water, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding valley. Originally constructed as a means of crossing the Iya River, the vine bridges of Iya Valley have a rich history, with legends attributing their creation to either Kobo Daishi, a revered Buddhist monk, or the Heike refugees who sought refuge in the valley after their defeat in the Gempei War. These bridges served as vital lifelines for the local people, with as many as 13 once spanning the valley. Today, only three remain, with the Iya Valley Bridge being the largest and most popular. Crafted from locally harvested Actinidia arguta vines, the bridge weighs approximately 5 tons, with the vines being replaced every three years. While the bridge appears delicate, steel cables are hidden within the vines to ensure the safety of visitors. Crossing the bridge is a thrilling experience, with the open slats providing an unsettling view of the water below. In the evenings, the bridge is illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere. Near the bridge, visitors can explore the Biwa Waterfall, a short walk from the bridge's exit, and enjoy local cuisine at nearby restaurants. The Iya Valley Bridge is recognized as an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property, preserving its historical and cultural significance for generations to come.
