Mt. Shiude Observation Deck, situated atop the 352-meter Mt. Shiude on the Shonai Peninsula in Mitoyo, Kagawa Prefecture, offers stunning panoramic views. The name 'Shiude' translates to 'purple clouds emerging from mountains,' inspired by the legend of Urashima Taro, a fisherman who, according to folklore, released a cloud of smoke that formed purple clouds over the mountain. The observation deck provides views of the Seto Inland Sea and its many islands. The site has historical significance, with archaeological evidence of a settlement dating back to the Yayoi period (300 BCE–300 CE). Artifacts such as earthenware and stoneware items have been discovered, and are displayed in the Mt. Shiude History Museum. The mountain is known as one of Japan's best cherry blossom viewing locations, with approximately 1,000 cherry trees. During late March and early April, the mountain is covered in pink blossoms. In early summer, hydrangeas add color to the landscape. The Mt. Shiude café, near the lookout point, offers a place to relax and enjoy the scenery.
