Sogenji Temple, officially known as 曹源寺 (Sōgenji), is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple located in Okayama, Japan. Founded in 1698 by Ikeda Tsunamasa, the second lord of the Okayama Clan, it served as the Ikeda family temple. The temple provides a peaceful retreat from the city. The temple grounds, approximately 200 meters square, are surrounded by a lush forest. A straight 300-meter approach leads to the Somon gate, followed by the Sanmon gate and Butsuden (main temple), arranged in a traditional Zen temple layout. Behind the Butsuden lies the Ikeda family cemetery. To the east of the Butsuden, a Japanese garden offers seasonal beauty, including cherry blossoms and autumn leaves. Sogenji stands out due to its international community. The chief priest welcomes ascetic Zen monks from around the world, resulting in a diverse group of practitioners. Visitors may encounter foreign priests within the temple grounds. Zazen meditation sessions are open to the public on Sunday mornings.
