Takaya Shrine: The Torii Gate to the Sky
Discover the breathtaking 'Torii in the Sky' at Takaya Shrine, offering panoramic views of Kanonji and the Seto Inland Sea from atop Mt. Inazumi.
Takaya Shrine, also known as 'Inazumi-san,' is a Shinto shrine with a rich history dating back to the Heian period. Originally located at the very peak of Mt. Inazumi, it was moved several times before being reconstructed on the summit in 1831. Today, it stands 404 meters (1,326 feet) high, offering unparalleled views of Kanonji City and the Seto Inland Sea. The shrine is dedicated to Shizukigi no Mikoto, Sakuyahime no Mikoto, and Hoshoku no Mikoto, the goddess of food, and has long been revered as a god of rice and good fortune. Many visitors come to pray for business prosperity and financial luck. The 'Torii in the Sky' is the main draw, a stone gate erected in 2009 that frames the stunning vista. The climb to the top can be an adventure, with options to hike or drive partway. The views are especially rewarding in spring, with cherry blossoms, or in the autumn when the leaves change color. While the shrine itself is open 24 hours, access to the summit is restricted on weekends and holidays when a shuttle bus service operates. Despite the crowds, the panoramic views and spiritual atmosphere make Takaya Shrine a must-see destination in Kagawa Prefecture.
Local tips
- Check the shuttle bus schedule if visiting on a weekend or holiday, as private vehicles are restricted from accessing the summit during those times.
- Wear comfortable shoes for the hike, as the trail can be steep and uneven in places.
- Bring water, especially if hiking, to stay hydrated during the climb.
- Visit during spring or autumn for pleasant weather and stunning views with cherry blossoms or autumn foliage.
- Consider visiting early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and capture the torii gate with softer lighting.
