Discover more about Teshima Art Museum

Nestled on a hillside overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, the Teshima Art Museum is a unique testament to the seamless integration of art, architecture, and nature. Designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa and artist Rei Naito, the museum's structure resembles a water droplet about to hit the ground, a fitting form for the art within. Inside this column-free concrete shell, measuring 40 by 60 meters with a height of 4.5 meters, lies Naito's 'Matrix'. Water continuously springs from the ground, forming droplets and rivulets that flow across the gently sloping floor. Two oval openings in the ceiling invite the outside world in, allowing sunlight, wind, and the sounds of nature to become integral parts of the artwork. The experience is ever-changing, as the light shifts throughout the day and the seasons alter the atmosphere within. The museum's surroundings are equally important. The terraced rice fields, restored in collaboration with local residents, create a harmonious landscape. Indigenous plants further blur the lines between the museum and its environment. Visitors are encouraged to slow down, observe, and connect with the natural world. The Teshima Art Museum offers a meditative space, inviting contemplation on the relationship between humanity and the environment.
