Hokkaido Jingu: Sapporo's Spiritual Heart

Discover tranquility at Sapporo's iconic Shinto shrine, a spiritual haven surrounded by natural beauty and rich history.

4.5

Hokkaido Jingu, located in Sapporo, is Hokkaido's most significant Shinto shrine. Established in 1869 during the Meiji Restoration, it was created to provide spiritual support to the island's early colonists. Originally named Sapporo-jinja, it was later renamed Hokkaido Jingu in 1964 to honor Emperor Meiji. The shrine enshrines four deities: Okunitama, Onamuchi, Sukunahikona, and Emperor Meiji himself. These gods are deeply connected to the land and nature of Hokkaido. Okunitama is considered the protector of Hokkaido. The shrine's architecture exemplifies traditional Japanese design, with prominent torii gates marking the entrance to the sacred grounds. Hokkaido Jingu is a popular destination throughout the year. In spring, the grounds become a celebrated spot for cherry blossom viewing. The Sapporo Festival in June brings vibrant parades and traditional music to the area. During the New Year's Hatsumode, many visitors come to pray for good fortune. In winter, the snow-covered landscape creates a magical atmosphere. Visitors can explore several smaller shrines within the grounds, including Kaitakushi Shrine, which commemorates the 70th anniversary of Hokkaido's opening. The shrine offers a peaceful retreat where one can appreciate Japanese culture, history, and the beauty of nature.
