Discover more about Otaru Art Base

Otaru Art Base is more than just a museum; it's a cultural experience set within Otaru's well-preserved historical architecture. The Art Base comprises several distinct museums housed in repurposed buildings from the early 20th century when Otaru flourished as a vital port city. These include the Stained Glass Museum, the Nitori Museum of Art, the Former Mitsui Bank Otaru Branch, and the House of Western Art. The Stained Glass Museum, located in the former Takahashi Warehouse, displays a collection of approximately 100 pieces of British stained glass art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These pieces, originally adorning churches across the UK, were preserved and brought to Otaru. The Nitori Museum of Art, formerly the Hokkaido Takushoku Bank, features masterpieces by Japanese painters and Western works, including stained glass by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The Former Mitsui Bank Otaru Branch showcases Otaru's economic past with its Renaissance-style architecture and preserved bank features. The House of Western Art, in the former Naniwa Warehouse, exhibits European and American Art Nouveau and Art Deco pieces. Otaru's history as a significant port and economic center is interwoven with the art on display, providing visitors with a unique perspective on the city's cultural development. The Otaru Art Base was established in 2016 by the Nitori company to give back to the community, preserve architectural heritage, and enrich Otaru's cultural landscape.
