Sōseigawa Park, stretching 820 meters north to south in central Sapporo, offers a refreshing escape within the city. This linear park follows the Sōseigawa River, which was originally a canal excavated in 1869 by Otomo Kametaro. Today, the park provides a pleasant environment for relaxation and recreation. The park features a variety of trees and flowers, offering seasonal beauty. Lilacs bloom in May, daylilies in July, and bush clovers in September. Eighteen sculptures by Japanese artists are placed along the walkways. The “Snow Ring,” a white circular bridge by Kozo Nishino in Mannaka Square, marks the origin point of Sapporo's north, south, east, and west axes. Historical monuments add depth to the park's appeal. Pioneer Square, centered on the Sōseigawa Bridge, includes a rest area modeled after the former Minami Ichijo Police Station. Here, you'll find the Monument for the Establishment of Sapporo and a statue of Otomo Kametaro. Tanuki Nijo Square, between Nijo Market and Tanukikoji Shopping Street, hosts events like beer gardens.
