Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From JR Otaru Station or the Otaru Canal Terminal, take a local bus to the Tenguyama Ropeway bus stop. The ride takes approximately 15-20 minutes. From the bus stop, it's a short walk to the ropeway station. A one-day pass for sightseeing in the area can be purchased at the terminal counter. Bus fare is approximately ¥240.

  • Taxi

    Taxis are readily available from JR Otaru Station. The taxi ride to Tenguyama Ropeway takes around 15 minutes. The estimated fare is ¥2000-¥3000. During winter, consider that the travel time may be longer due to road conditions.

  • Ropeway

    The final ascent to the summit of Tenguyama is via the Otaru Tenguyama Ropeway. A round-trip ticket costs ¥1,800 for adults (middle school age and older) and ¥900 for children. The ropeway ride takes about 4 minutes, departing every 12 minutes (every 6 minutes during busy times).

Tenguyama, rising 532.4 meters above sea level, is a symbol of Otaru and one of Hokkaido's best vantage points. The mountain is named after the Tengu, a long-nosed mythical creature in Japanese folklore, with the mountain's shape said to resemble its distinctive nose. A ride on the Otaru Tenguyama Ropeway takes you on a swift 4-minute journey from the base to the summit.
