Discover more about Moerenuma Park

Moerenuma Park is a sprawling urban oasis in Sapporo, Hokkaido, conceived as a single, unified sculpture by the renowned Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi. Noguchi envisioned transforming a former waste disposal site into a space where art and nature seamlessly intertwine. Construction began in 1982, and the park was opened to the public in 2005, becoming a landmark that embodies innovative landscape design. The park's vast grounds, covering approximately 188 hectares, showcase Noguchi's signature geometric forms and minimalist aesthetic. Visitors can explore iconic features such as Mount Moere, a 62-meter-high artificial mountain offering panoramic views of the park and surrounding city. The Glass Pyramid, named Hidamari, serves as a visitor center and art gallery, hosting exhibitions and offering a space for relaxation. The Sea Fountain, a dynamic water sculpture, puts on captivating shows throughout the day. Moerenuma Park offers a variety of activities and attractions for all seasons. In spring, the park's many cherry trees burst into bloom, creating a picturesque setting for hanami (flower viewing). Summer brings opportunities for water play at Moere Beach, a shallow wading area, and enjoyment of the Sea Fountain's performances. Autumn transforms the park into a tapestry of vibrant colors, while winter offers cross-country skiing and sledding on the snow-covered slopes. More than just a park, Moerenuma is a testament to the power of art to transform and revitalize urban spaces. It stands as a lasting legacy of Isamu Noguchi's vision, inviting visitors to connect with nature, engage with art, and discover new perspectives.
