Perched 513 meters above sea level in Takachiho, Miyazaki Prefecture, the Kunimigaoka Viewing Platform provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Kunimigaoka is known as one of the most spectacular views in Miyazaki. Legend states that Takeiwatatsu-no-mikoto, grandson of Emperor Jinmu, surveyed the country from this very spot, hence the name 'Kunimigaoka' (Country-Viewing Hill). From the platform, visitors can witness the Aso Five Peaks to the west, resembling a reclining Buddha, the Sobo Mountain range to the north, and the expansive Takachiho Basin to the east. However, Kunimigaoka is most famous for its 'sea of clouds' (Unkai), a breathtaking phenomenon occurring on clear, calm mornings from mid-September to late November. The Takachiho Basin becomes enveloped in a sea of clouds, creating a surreal and unforgettable vista. The viewing platform is easily accessible and offers free parking. It's a year-round destination, with each season offering a unique perspective, from vibrant greens in the summer to golden hues in the autumn.
