Discover more about Kagoshima City Aquarium

Kagoshima City Aquarium, which opened in 1997, is one of the largest aquariums in Kyushu. Known locally as Io World (with 'Io' meaning fish in the Kagoshima dialect), the aquarium is dedicated to showcasing the unique marine ecosystems of the Kagoshima region. With its location beside the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal, a visit to the aquarium is easily combined with a trip to the active volcano. The aquarium's exhibits span seven floors, each focusing on different aspects of Kagoshima's marine environment. The most popular attraction is the Kuroshio Great Water Tank, home to whale sharks, manta rays, tuna, and other species that migrate with the Kuroshio Current. Visitors can walk through an underwater tunnel for an up-close view of these creatures. Other exhibits include the Sea of Nansei Islands, featuring colorful tropical fish and coral reefs, and the Deep Sea of Kagoshima, displaying deep-sea creatures unique to the area. The Jellyfish Gallery showcases the diverse jellyfish species found in Kagoshima's waters. Interactive experiences include dolphin performances and feeding sessions. The outdoor Dolphin Waterway allows dolphins to swim freely in a specially maintained 300-meter waterway connected to Kinko Bay. The aquarium also hosts special exhibits and events throughout the year to educate visitors about marine conservation.
