Mount Kurama: A Mystical Mountain Escape

Mount Kurama, located north of Kyoto, is a mountain renowned for its spiritual significance and natural beauty. Rising 584 meters, it is home to Kurama-dera Temple, founded in 770 AD, and is considered a mystical place with a rich history and folklore. Kurama-dera Temple was initially established by Gantei Shonin, a disciple of Jianzhen, who, guided by a dream, recognized the mountain's spiritual power. Over the centuries, the temple has been associated with various Buddhist sects, ultimately forming its own unique religious identity. The temple is dedicated to Sonten, a trinity representing power, light, and love. Bishamonten, one of the Four Heavenly Kings, is also enshrined here. Mount Kurama is also known for its association with the mythical Tengu, supernatural beings believed to protect the forests. These creatures, often depicted with long noses and wings, are said to have taught martial arts to Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a famous warrior, during his time at Kurama Temple as a child. A statue of Sojobo, the king of the Tengu, greets visitors near Kurama Station. Visitors can explore the mountain through hiking trails that wind through lush cedar forests, past smaller temples and shrines. A cable car is available for those seeking a less strenuous ascent. The hike to the main temple complex takes approximately 30-45 minutes. From there, a trail continues to Kibune, a neighboring village known for Kifune Shrine, a journey of about an hour. Kurama Onsen, a hot spring located near Kurama Station, offers a relaxing experience with indoor and outdoor baths. The outdoor bath provides scenic views of the surrounding hills.
