Discover more about Shikoku Karst

Shikoku Karst Natural Park, a designated Prefectural Natural Park, is a unique geological formation sculpted by the erosion of limestone hillsides. Spanning approximately 25 kilometers along the border between Ehime and Kochi prefectures, the karst is one of Japan's three largest karst landscapes, alongside Akiyoshidai and Hiraodai. The area features a distinctive landscape of exposed limestone formations scattered across sprawling meadows, set against clear skies. The park's central feature is the Shikoku Karst plateau, rising to elevations between 1,000 and 1,500 meters. This creates a 'road in the sky' experience, especially along Route 383, one of Japan's 100 most scenic roads. The panoramic views extend to the Shikoku Mountains and, on clear days, even the Pacific Ocean. Key areas within the park include the Tengu Highland, Keyakidaira, and Mezurudaira, each offering unique attractions. Visitors can explore the karst's beauty through various activities. Scenic drives along the mountain ridge are popular, as are hiking and cycling. Several trails, including the Tengu Highland Therapy Road, offer immersive experiences in nature. The park transitions beautifully through the seasons, with vibrant green grasslands in spring, alpine flowers in summer, colorful foliage in autumn, and snow-dusted landscapes in winter. Camping is a popular option during the summer months, offering the chance to immerse yourself in the tranquil atmosphere and enjoy the starlit sky.
