Izuruhara Benten Pond: A Sanctuary of Serenity

Izuruhara Benten Pond, located in Sano, Tochigi Prefecture, is a hidden gem renowned for its crystal-clear waters and tranquil atmosphere. Designated as a Prefectural Natural Treasure, the pond is also recognized as one of Japan's 100 best water sources by the Ministry of Environment. The pond's water, filtered through a limestone stratum, maintains a constant temperature of around 16 degrees Celsius year-round. The pond is named after Benten (also known as Benzaiten), the Japanese goddess of music, wealth, and knowledge, adding a layer of cultural significance to the site. Nearby, the Isoyama Benzaiten Shrine, with a history spanning over 1,000 years, stands as a testament to traditional Japanese architecture, constructed without the use of nails. Reconstructed in the Kamakura period (1185-1333), the shrine is dedicated to Isoyama Benzaiten, one of the seven lucky Sano gods built here in 948. Visitors to Izuruhara Benten Pond can admire the vibrant koi fish gracefully swimming among the swaying water plants in the transparent waters.
