Car
If you are driving from Shimotsuke, take the Route 4 (also known as the Nikko Utsunomiya Road) heading north. Follow the signs for Nikko. The drive is approximately 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Once you arrive in Nikko, look for signs directing you to Nikkō Tōshogū, which is located at 2301 Sannai. There is parking available near the shrine, but be aware that there might be a parking fee of around 500 yen.
Train
To reach Nikkō Tōshogū using public transportation, start by taking the JR Utsunomiya Line from Shimotsuke City Station to Utsunomiya Station. The train ride takes about 18 minutes. Once at Utsunomiya Station, transfer to the Tōbu Nikkō Line and take a train heading towards Nikkō Station. This leg of the journey will take about 45 minutes. Upon arriving at Nikkō Station, you can either walk (about 30 minutes) or take a bus (approximately 10 minutes) to Nikkō Tōshogū. The bus fare is around 300 yen.
Bus
Alternatively, you can take a direct bus from Shimotsuke to Nikkō. Check the local bus schedules for availability. The bus will take you directly to the Nikkō area where you can get off at a stop near Nikkō Tōshogū. The bus ride typically takes about an hour and costs around 1,500 yen. Once you get off, follow the signs to the shrine, which is approximately a 10-minute walk.
