Discover more about 合掌村 Ogimachi

Nestled in the remote mountains of Gifu Prefecture, Ogimachi is the largest village in the Shirakawa-go region and a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. The village's main draw is its collection of well-preserved gassho-zukuri farmhouses, characterized by their distinctive, steeply sloped thatched roofs designed to withstand heavy snowfall. These roofs resemble two hands clasped in prayer, hence the name 'gassho'. Ogimachi is more than just a picturesque village; it's a living community where residents continue to inhabit and maintain the traditional houses. Several of these homes are over 250 years old, offering a glimpse into Japan's rural past. Visitors can explore the village's charming streets, visit museums housed in former residences, and learn about the unique architectural and cultural heritage of the region. The village is particularly enchanting in winter when the gassho-style houses are blanketed in snow, creating a magical, fairytale-like scene. The 'yui' system of cooperation, where villagers assist each other in maintaining the structures, is a key part of the village's cultural heritage. Every 30 to 40 years, the thatched roofs need to be replaced, a task that requires the entire community to work together. This spirit of collaboration has helped preserve Ogimachi and its unique way of life for generations. For panoramic views of Ogimachi, the Shiroyama Viewpoint is a popular spot.
