Discover more about Nihondaira Ropeway

The Nihondaira Ropeway, opened in 1967, provides a vital link between the scenic Nihondaira plateau and the historically significant Kunozan Toshogu Shrine. This 1,065-meter aerial tramway offers passengers a swift, five-minute journey over the stunning Byobudani Valley, showcasing dramatic cliffs and vibrant seasonal changes. Nihondaira itself, reaching a maximum altitude of 308 meters, has been celebrated as one of Japan's top 100 landscapes since 1927 and designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 1954. From this vantage point, visitors can witness unparalleled views of Mount Fuji, the Izu Peninsula, the Southern Japanese Alps, Shimizu Port, and Suruga Bay. The Nihondaira Yume Terrace, designed by architect Kengo Kuma, offers additional viewing platforms, a Japanese tea house, and a museum to enhance the visitor experience. The ropeway delivers visitors to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, a national treasure dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period. The shrine's buildings, constructed in the Gongen-zukuri style, showcase intricate Edo-period architectural techniques and are a testament to the skill of master carpenter Nakai Masakiyo. The shrine was originally built in 1617 by Ieyasu's son and is a site where his spirit is worshipped. The Nihondaira Ropeway is more than just a means of transportation; it's an integral part of the journey, offering stunning views and access to a rich cultural heritage.
