Discover more about Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium

Venture into the mysterious world of the deep sea at the Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium, the first aquarium in the world dedicated to the creatures dwelling over 200 meters below the surface. Opened in 2011, this unique aquarium takes advantage of its location next to Suruga Bay, Japan's deepest bay, reaching depths of 2,500 meters. The aquarium features a diverse collection of deep-sea inhabitants, many of which are difficult to keep in captivity. Exhibits showcase creatures from Suruga Bay and other deep-sea environments around the world. Don't miss the Suruga Bay Large Tank, home to unique species from the bay, and the Deep Sea Planetarium, where you can observe bioluminescent lanterneye fish glowing in the dark. A highlight of the aquarium is the Coelacanth Museum, displaying two frozen and three taxidermied coelacanths. These ancient fish, once thought to be extinct, are considered living fossils, with some having lived in the deep sea for millions of years. The Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium is the only place in the world where you can see frozen coelacanth specimens. Beyond the exhibits, the aquarium aims to educate visitors about the deep sea and promote local pride in Suruga Bay. The museum shop offers a variety of deep-sea themed souvenirs, including stuffed animals, accessories, and sweets.
