The roots of many traditional crafts in Shizuoka stem from the construction of the Sengen Shrine in Sumpu during the Edo period. Skilled artisans gathered from all over the country and, after the shrine's completion, they stayed in the area and continued to produce art, enriching Japanese lives with their skills and traditions. At the Sumpu Craft Hall, visitors can learn about the history of traditional crafts and view exhibitions of highly skilled artisans. Sumpu Takumishuku offers a variety of craft experiences, such as Suruga bamboo crafts, Japanese dyeing, woodwork, lacquer, and ceramics. Popular crafts include Suruga bamboo ware, Hina dolls, and Suruga Japanese dyeing. You can also explore the Plastic Model workshop supervised by Tamiya Corporation, a leader in Shizuoka's signature local industries.
