  • Public Transport

    From Shibuya Station, take the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line to Kita-sando Station (approximately 7 minutes, ¥180). Exit at Kita-sando Station and walk approximately 5 minutes to the shrine. Alternatively, take the JR Sobu Line to Sendagaya Station (approximately 9 minutes) and walk 5 minutes to the shrine.

  • Walking

    From the Japan National Stadium, walk along Gaien Nishi Dori avenue. Turn right onto Route 416 and continue straight. The shrine will be on the left, approximately a 10-minute walk.

  • Taxi

    Taxis are readily available in Shibuya. A short taxi ride from Shibuya Station to Hatonomori Hachiman Shrine typically costs between ¥800 and ¥1200, depending on traffic. Note that taxi fares increase by 20% from 10 PM to 5 AM.

Hatonomori Hachiman Shrine, located in Sendagaya, Shibuya, is a Shinto shrine with a history stretching back over 1100 years. According to legend, auspicious clouds and white doves led villagers to consecrate the site as a sacred space. In 860 AD, a priest enshrined statues of Emperor Ōjin, Empress Jingū, and Kasuga Ōkami, establishing it as a Hachiman shrine.The shrine's grounds offer several points of interest. The Sendagaya Fujizuka, built in 1789, is Tokyo's oldest remaining replica of Mount Fuji, offering a symbolic climb for those unable to make the journey to the real mountain. The Shogi Hall enshrines a large shogi (Japanese chess) piece, reflecting the shrine's connection to the nearby Japan Shogi Association. The main hall, reconstructed in 1993 after being destroyed in World War II, is made of zelkova wood and features 108 paintings of flowers and tools.Visitors can also find the Koga Inari Shrine, a Noh theater stage, and a sacred ginkgo tree that survived the war. The shrine provides a peaceful retreat with its lush greenery and dove-themed charms, reflecting its name, which includes the word "hato" (dove). Foreign language omikuji (fortune slips) are available in English, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.
