Discover more about Takeda Castle Ruins

Takeda Castle Ruins, perched atop Mt. Kojo in Asago City, Hyogo Prefecture, offer a captivating blend of history and natural beauty. Built in 1443, the castle was initially a stronghold controlled by the Otagaki clan before falling to Toyotomi Hideyoshi's forces in 1580. The castle was abandoned in 1600 following the Battle of Sekigahara. Over time, the castle gradually fell into disrepair until restoration efforts in the 1970s and 80s opened it as a tourist site. Today, visitors can explore the remarkably intact stone foundations, which reveal the castle's layout with its central fortress and three wings. The stone walls were constructed using the 'Nozura-zumi' technique, where stones of varying sizes are stacked with minimal gaps. The corners feature the 'Sangi-zumi' method. The ruins stretch 400 meters from north to south and 100 meters east to west, providing an expansive walking course with scenic viewpoints. The castle's nickname, the "Castle in the Sky," comes from the breathtaking phenomenon of unkai (sea of clouds) that often occurs in the early mornings of October and November. When the conditions are right, the valleys below fill with fog, creating the illusion that the castle is floating. The most popular spot to witness this spectacle is from the Ritsuunkyo valley on the opposite mountain slope, where observation decks offer stunning views. Even without the sea of clouds, Takeda Castle Ruins offer impressive views of the surrounding mountains and the town below. The site is recognized as one of Japan's Top 100 Castles and a National Historic Site, making it a worthwhile destination for history buffs and nature lovers alike.
