Overview
Iseyama Kotaijingu, established in 1870, holds a significant place in Yokohama's cultural and historical landscape. Known as the "Oise-san of the Kanto Region," it enshrines Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess and ancestral deity of the Imperial family. The shrine was built during the Meiji era, a period of rapid modernization and social change in Japan. Its establishment was partly a response to the growing foreign presence and the perceived threat of Christianity following the opening of the port of Yokohama.Strategically located on a hill overlooking the foreign settlement, Iseyama Kotaijingu symbolized a reaffirmation of national identity and resistance against foreign influence. The shrine aimed to unify the nation, safeguard against foreign encroachments, curb the spread of Christianity, and foster loyalty to the emperor. In 1871, a ceremony transferred the divided spirit of Amaterasu Omikami from Ise Jingu to Iseyama Kotaijingu, reinforcing its spiritual and political importance.Iseyama Kotaijingu was destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 but was rebuilt in 1928. Today, the shrine is a popular place for worship, festivals, and traditional ceremonies. It is known for its inclusive atmosphere and serves as a center for community gatherings and religious events. Many people visit the shrine on New Year's Day and for cherry blossom viewing.
