Jindaiji Temple: A Tranquil Escape in Tokyo

Jindaiji Temple, located in the tranquil suburb of Chofu, Tokyo, is a serene escape from the city's frenetic pace. Founded in 733 AD, it stands as the second oldest temple in Tokyo, offering a unique blend of ancient history, natural beauty, and cultural experiences. Unlike the bustling Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, Jindaiji provides a peaceful atmosphere with its lush greenery and traditional architecture. The temple's history is rooted in a legend involving a deity named Jinja Daioh, who played a role in uniting two lovers. The temple grounds feature several noteworthy structures, including the Sanmon Gate, dating back to 1695, one of the few remaining Edo-period structures in Tokyo. The Honden (Main Hall), rebuilt in 1919, enshrines the principal Buddha statue. The Ganzan Daishi Hall is dedicated to the monk Ryogen and houses his effigy. The Shakka-do (Buddha Hall) is home to the Hakuhoh Buddha statue, a national treasure and the oldest Buddha statue in Eastern Japan, which is viewable only on the 8th of each month. Visitors can explore the temple grounds, discover serene ponds with koi carp and turtles, and enjoy the changing scenery with each season. The approach to the temple is lined with traditional shops and soba restaurants, offering a taste of local culinary heritage. Jindaiji is also known for its Daruma doll tradition and hosts one of Japan's largest Daruma doll fairs every March.
