Tanashi Shrine: A Dragon's Abode in Tokyo

Tanashi Shrine, nestled in the city of Nishitokyo, holds a rich history that stretches back to the Kamakura period (1288-1293). Originally known as Jodengongen and located in Kitayato, it was moved to its current location in 1670 and renamed Tanashi Shrine in 1872. This venerable shrine is dedicated to Shinatsuhiko-no-Mikoto, Shinatobe-no-Mikoto, and Okuninushi-no-Mikoto, with the former two revered as gods of wind since the shrine's founding. What sets Tanashi Shrine apart is its unique dedication to the Five Dragon Gods. Based on the Five Elements philosophy, the main hall enshrines Shinatsuhiko-no-Mikoto and Shinatobe-no-Mikoto as the Golden Dragon, while Black, White, Red, and Blue Dragons are enshrined around the precincts. Each dragon is associated with a direction and element, creating a powerful spiritual presence. Visitors can explore the well-maintained grounds, discover water fountains and installations related to the dragons, and admire the intricate carvings in the main hall crafted by Edo-period artisan Shimamura Shumpyo. The main hall is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Throughout the year, the shrine hosts various festivals and events, including the Dragon God Festival on September 19th and special public viewings of the main hall in November.
