Discover more about Yushima Shrine

Yushima Shrine, officially Yushima Tenmangu, is a serene Shinto shrine nestled in Tokyo's Bunkyo ward. Founded in 458 AD, it initially honored Ame-no-Tajikarao-mikoto, a kami associated with physical strength. In 1355, it expanded to enshrine Tenjin, the deified spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, a renowned Heian-era scholar, poet, and politician. This connection solidified the shrine's reputation as a haven for learning and academic achievement. Today, Yushima Shrine attracts students praying for success in their studies, especially during exam season. Visitors write their wishes on ema (votive tablets) and hang them at the shrine. A bronze statue of a cow, believed to have healing powers, also stands on the grounds. Rubbing the statue's corresponding body part is said to alleviate ailments. The shrine is also celebrated for its plum blossoms (ume), which bloom from February to early March. The Ume Matsuri (Plum Blossom Festival) during this time features outdoor tea ceremonies, traditional music, and plum wine tasting. Other annual events include the Tenjin-sai Grand Festival on May 25th and the Chrysanthemum Festival in November. The shrine's architecture reflects traditional Shinto design, with intricate carvings and vibrant colors. Rebuilt in 1995 using cypress wood, the buildings maintain historical and spiritual integrity.
