Asakusa, a district in Taitō, Tokyo, is famous for the Sensō-ji temple, dedicated to the bodhisattva Kannon. Its festival, the Sanja Matsuri, is one of Tokyo's most spectacular. Asakusa's history dates back to the Asuka period (552–645). Legend says that in 628, two brothers found a golden statue of Kannon in the Sumida River. Haji no Nakamoto, recognized the statue and converted his home into a temple to enshrine it. This event is considered the beginning of Senso-ji Temple. During the Edo period (1603–1867), Asakusa flourished as an entertainment district. The area was home to theaters, cinemas, and performance venues. Although Asakusa was damaged during World War II, it was rebuilt and continues to be a popular destination.
