Hikarigaoka Park: Tokyo's Urban Oasis

Hikarigaoka Park, situated in Nerima Ward, Tokyo, is a verdant retreat with a rich history. Originally planned in 1940 as a green space to commemorate Japan's 2600th anniversary, the area was repurposed as the Narimasu Airfield during World War II. Post-war, it served as a U.S. military housing complex known as Grant Heights. In 1973, the land was returned to Japan, and in 1981, a portion of the originally planned area was transformed into Hikarigaoka Park. The park spans over 60 hectares and boasts approximately 17,000 trees, including around 1,000 cherry trees. In spring, the park becomes a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing (hanami). The park also features a 'Ginkgo Avenue,' a row of approximately 40 ginkgo trees, some over 100 years old, that create a golden tunnel in autumn. Hikarigaoka Park offers a variety of recreational facilities, including baseball fields, tennis courts, an archery range, a bird sanctuary, and a children's playground. The park also has a large lawn area perfect for picnics and relaxation. Other attractions include public art, a pond, a day campground, and a barbecue area. The Hikarigaoka Library and Gymnasium are also located within the park. The park hosts various events throughout the year, including flea markets, festivals, and sporting events. The Hawarin-bayaru, a Mongolian Spring Festival, is held annually during Golden Week.
