Founded in 1637 during the Edo period, the temple was once at the center of a thriving entertainment area. Though much of the temple was destroyed during World War II, it was lovingly rebuilt by the people of Osaka. The temple's main attraction is the Mizukake Fudo statue. This statue of Fudo Myoo, one of the five Wisdom Kings of Buddhism, is almost entirely covered in moss due to the tradition of visitors splashing water on it while making a wish. This practice has been going on for nearly a century, giving the statue its unique appearance and earning it the nickname 'Splashing Water Fudo'. Located just a short walk from Dotonbori, Hōzen-ji provides a glimpse into Osaka's past. The temple is open 24 hours a day, allowing visitors to experience its peaceful atmosphere at any time.
