Discover more about Matsuchiyama Shoden

Matsuchiyama Shoden, officially named Honryuin, is a Buddhist temple located on a small hilltop in the Asakusa area of Tokyo. Founded in 601 AD, it predates the more famous Senso-ji Temple and offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling tourist crowds. The temple is dedicated to Kangi-ten, a Buddhist deity associated with bliss, love, and prosperity. According to legend, the hill of Matsuchi suddenly rose from the ground in 595 AD, and a golden dragon descended to protect it. Six years later, during a severe drought, Kannon appeared in the form of Daisho Kangiten to save the people. The grateful citizens then built Honryuin Temple to enshrine Kangi-ten. The temple is part of the Sho-Kannon Sect of the Tendai School of Buddhism. One of the most distinctive features of Matsuchiyama Shoden is its association with daikon radishes. These white radishes are offered to Kangi-ten and symbolize good health, marital harmony, and success in business. Daikon motifs can be found throughout the temple grounds, adorning lanterns, carvings, and even the temple's monorail. Visitors can purchase daikon at the temple as offerings, and on January 7th, the Daikon Matsuri festival is held, where cooked daikon and sake are served to visitors. Another symbol associated with the temple is the kinchaku, a Japanese pouch, representing business success and the benefits of faith. The temple also features a unique monorail, called Sakura Rail, to help visitors reach the Main Hall. Though rebuilt in 1961 after wartime destruction, Matsuchiyama Shoden retains a spiritual atmosphere and offers scenic views of the Sumida River.
