Discover more about Momiji valley

Momiji Valley, or Momiji-dani, is a picturesque, man-made valley located within Shiba Park in Tokyo. The name 'Momiji' refers to Japanese maple trees, known for their vibrant red leaves in the autumn. This tranquil space offers a serene escape from the bustling city. Designed by Yasuhei Nagaoka, a pioneer in Japanese landscape design, Momiji Valley was completed in 1905. Nagaoka aimed to create a naturalistic landscape, planting trees that would highlight the changing seasons. The valley features a small, beautifully landscaped waterfall at its center, with spring water trickling down. A walking path meanders along the stream, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the peaceful atmosphere. At the end of the path lies Snake Mound, adorned with Jizo statues believed to protect children. While Shiba Park itself dates back to 1873, making it one of Japan's oldest parks, Momiji Valley offers a more intimate and curated experience. In autumn, the valley transforms into a spectacle of color, living up to its name as the maple leaves turn brilliant shades of red and gold. It's a popular spot for 'Momijigari' – the Japanese tradition of enjoying autumn foliage. Even outside of autumn, the valley provides a cool, shaded respite, making it a refreshing stop after visiting nearby attractions like Tokyo Tower and Zojo-ji Temple.
