Discover more about Nezu Museum

Nestled in the Aoyama district of Tokyo, the Nezu Museum offers a serene escape into the world of Japanese and East Asian art and culture. Founded in 1941, the museum showcases the private collection of Nezu Kaichirō (1860–1940), a businessman and tea ceremony enthusiast. The museum's collection includes paintings, calligraphy, sculptures, ceramics, lacquerware, and more, with seven National Treasures and numerous Important Cultural Properties. The museum building, redesigned by architect Kengo Kuma in 2009, blends modern aesthetics with traditional Japanese design. A highlight of the Nezu Museum is its expansive 17,000 square meter Japanese garden. This meticulously landscaped oasis features ponds, streams, tea houses, and stone lanterns, providing a tranquil space to appreciate nature. The garden is designed in the *shinzan-yūkoku* style, evoking deep mountains and mysterious valleys. Please note that the garden, cafe and museum shop are only accessible to museum patrons. Visitors can explore a variety of exhibits, including the celebrated *Irises* by Ogata Kōrin, a National Treasure. The museum hosts seven exhibitions a year, each with a different theme, ensuring a fresh experience with every visit. After viewing the art, visitors can relax at NEZUCAFÉ, which offers picturesque views of the garden. The museum is closed on Mondays.
