Discover more about Ono Terusaki shrine

Ono Terusaki Shrine, located in the Shitaya neighborhood of Taito City, Tokyo, provides a serene and authentic cultural experience. Founded in 852, the shrine is dedicated to Ono-no-Takamura, a distinguished Heian-era poet, scholar, and government official. Originally located in Ueno, the shrine was moved to its current location in 1625 to make way for the construction of Kaneiji Temple.Ono-no-Takamura is revered as a deity of learning and the arts, attracting those seeking success in these fields. The shrine is also associated with the practice of giving up certain foods or habits for spiritual betterment, a tradition linked to Ono-no-Takamura's own discipline. Visitors often come to pray for help in abstaining from unhealthy habits, including quitting smoking. The shrine grounds feature a miniature Mt. Fuji, a replica built in 1782 using lava rock from the actual mountain. These miniature Fujis were created during the Edo period to allow people who couldn't make the pilgrimage to the real Mt. Fuji to still pay their respects. Although usually closed off, it is opened during the shrine's festival in June. Ono Terusaki Shrine is also one of the Eight Lucky Gods of Tokyo Shitamachi, specifically associated with blessings for academics and performing arts. The main shrine building remarkably survived both the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the air raids of World War II.
