The Ueno Royal Museum, established in 1972, is a private museum nestled in Ueno Park and managed by the Japan Art Association. Unlike many museums, the Ueno Royal Museum does not have a permanent collection. Instead, it offers a dynamic series of temporary exhibitions spanning various artistic genres, including contemporary art, calligraphy, manga, and ukiyo-e prints. These exhibitions often feature both established and emerging artists, providing a platform for new talent.
The museum is known for hosting annual exhibitions such as the Ueno Royal Museum Grand Prize Exhibition, the Japanese Nature Painting Exhibition, and the VOCA (Vision of Contemporary Art) exhibition, which has been promoting new artists since 1994. The Ueno Royal Museum also hosts prestigious touring exhibitions from overseas.
Located on the east side of Ueno Park, the museum is a short walk from other major attractions, making it easy to include in a tour of the park. Inside, visitors can find a café serving refreshments and a small shop selling art supplies and books related to current and past exhibitions.

Getting There
Walking
From the Ueno Park Exit of JR Ueno Station, walk south into Ueno Park. Pass the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan on your left. Continue a short distance, and the Ueno Royal Museum will be on your right, a little north of the statue of Saigo Takamori. There is no admission fee to enter Ueno Park, but the museum will have an entry fee.
Public Transport
From Ueno Station (Ginza or Hibiya subway lines), take exit 7 or 9. Walk for about 5 minutes towards Ueno Park. Once inside the park, follow the walking directions to reach the museum. Subway fare from Tokyo Station to Ueno Station is approximately ¥200.
