The Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo Travel Guide

The Ueno Royal Museum, established in 1972, is a private museum nestled in Ueno Park and managed by the Japan Art Association. Unlike many museums, the Ueno Royal Museum does not have a permanent collection. Instead, it offers a dynamic series of temporary exhibitions spanning various artistic genres, including contemporary art, calligraphy, manga, and ukiyo-e prints. These exhibitions often feature both established and emerging artists, providing a platform for new talent.The museum is known for hosting annual exhibitions such as the Ueno Royal Museum Grand Prize Exhibition, the Japanese Nature Painting Exhibition, and the VOCA (Vision of Contemporary Art) exhibition, which has been promoting new artists since 1994. The Ueno Royal Museum also hosts prestigious touring exhibitions from overseas.Located on the east side of Ueno Park, the museum is a short walk from other major attractions, making it easy to include in a tour of the park.
