Yamashita Park is a beloved public park in Yokohama, Japan, renowned for its captivating waterfront views and rich history. Opened in 1930, the park was ingeniously created using rubble and debris from the devastating Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, transforming a site of destruction into a symbol of resilience and renewal. Stretching nearly 700 meters along Yokohama Port, Yamashita Park offers a picturesque promenade with stunning views of Yokohama Bay, the Yokohama Bay Bridge, and the Minato Mirai skyline. The park is home to various gardens, including a beautiful rose garden with over 1,900 roses of 160 varieties that bloom in spring and autumn. Throughout the park, visitors can discover a collection of monuments and statues, each with its own story. These include the iconic Statue of the Girl with Red Shoes, inspired by a famous Japanese nursery rhyme; the Guardian of Water statue, a gift from Yokohama's sister city, San Diego; and the Indian Water Fountain, a tribute to the victims of the Great Kanto Earthquake. One of the park's main attractions is the Hikawa Maru, a historic Japanese ocean liner that once sailed between Yokohama and Seattle. Now a museum ship, visitors can explore its interior and learn about its fascinating history. Yamashita Park is also conveniently located near other popular attractions, such as Yokohama Chinatown, the Red Brick Warehouse, and the Yokohama Marine Tower.
