Zoorasia: A Journey Through the World's Ecosystems

Explore diverse habitats and rare species at Yokohama's Zoorasia, a leading zoo dedicated to conservation and immersive experiences.

4.3

Zoorasia, or Yokohama Zoological Gardens, offers a unique zoological experience based on the themes of “Symbiosis of Life” and “Harmony with Nature”. Opened in 1999, the zoo spans a vast 45.3 hectares and is divided into eight distinct ecological zones, each replicating the natural habitats of its inhabitants. Visitors can traverse the Asian Tropical Forest, Subarctic Forest, Oceanian Grassland, Central Asian Highland, Japanese Countryside, Amazon Jungle, African Tropical Rainforest, and African Savannah. This layout allows guests to embark on a virtual world tour, encountering diverse species in environments closely resembling their native homes. Zoorasia is home to approximately 600 animals representing around 100 species, including rare and endangered animals. Highlights include the okapi, a symbol of Zoorasia, elephants, polar bears, proboscis monkeys and Sumatran tigers. The zoo prioritizes animal welfare, providing spacious enclosures with natural features. Clear windows offer excellent viewing opportunities, enhancing the feeling of being on a walking safari. Zoorasia also actively participates in conservation efforts, including breeding programs for endangered species. Beyond animal exhibits, Zoorasia features nature trails, restaurants, cafes, picnic areas, and play areas for children, ensuring a full day of exploration and enjoyment for the whole family.
