Discover more about Kaneda Fortress Ruins

Kaneda Fortress Ruins, located on Tsushima Island, Nagasaki, offers a captivating blend of history and stunning landscapes. This ancient Korean-style fortress, also known as Kanatanoki or Kanetanoki, was constructed in 667 AD by the Yamato Imperial Court following their defeat in the Battle of Hakusukinoe. The fortress was part of a series of fortifications built across western Japan to defend against potential attacks from the allied forces of Tang China and Silla. Strategically positioned on the mountaintop of Joyama, Kaneda Fortress provided a crucial vantage point overlooking Aso Bay and the Korean Peninsula. For over a thousand years, this site remained at the forefront of national defense. Just before the Russo-Japanese War, the Imperial Japanese Army constructed huge cannons here. Today, visitors can explore the extensive ruins, including the remnants of stone walls and earthen embankments. The well-maintained hiking course, originally a military road developed over a century ago, leads to the summit. From the top, enjoy panoramic views of Aso Bay and the surrounding islands. The area is designated as a special historic site, preserving the legacies of ancient warriors and modern fortifications.
