Discover more about 宮之浦岳

Mount Miyanoura (宮之浦岳, Miyanoura-dake) stands as the crowning point of Yakushima Island, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the highest peak in the Kyushu region. Reaching an elevation of 1,936 meters (6,352 feet), this majestic mountain offers unparalleled panoramic views of the island's unique landscape, from its ancient cedar forests to its rugged granite peaks and the vast expanse of the surrounding ocean. Formed primarily of granite over millions of years, Mount Miyanoura showcases a landscape sculpted by erosion, with numerous bizarre rock formations dotting its upper reaches. The mountain's slopes are home to diverse ecosystems, transitioning from old-growth Yakusugi cedar forests at lower elevations to a windswept alpine zone near the summit. Here, you'll find dwarf bamboo (Yakushima-dake), rhododendrons (Yakushima-shakunage), and other hardy plant species adapted to the harsh conditions. Hiking to the summit of Mount Miyanoura is a challenging but rewarding experience, typically requiring 8-9 hours for a round trip. The most popular trails begin from the Yodogawa Trailhead, offering access to the mountain's diverse scenery. Along the way, hikers encounter ancient Yakusugi cedars, clear mountain streams, and unique geological formations. The summit provides a 360-degree vista, encompassing the surrounding peaks of Yakushima, the islands of Tanegashima and Kuchinoerabu-jima, and even the distant mainland of Kyushu on a clear day. Mount Miyanoura has long been a sacred site, with locals traditionally making pilgrimages to its summit to pray for good harvests and prosperity. Today, it continues to draw visitors seeking to connect with nature and experience the spiritual heart of Yakushima.
