Discover more about Janokuchi Falls

Janokuchi Falls, aptly named 'snake-mouth' in Japanese, presents a rewarding, less-traveled natural attraction on Yakushima Island. Unlike the more popular Oko and Senpiro Falls, Janokuchi offers a tranquil escape into the island's lush interior. The waterfall itself appears to plunge 30 meters down a wide granite wall, but the cascade extends another 100 meters upwards, making it even taller than Oko Falls. The 4-kilometer hike to Janokuchi Falls typically takes around two hours each way, guiding you through a captivating display of Yakushima's biodiversity. The trail begins near Onoaida Onsen, offering a chance to relax in the hot springs after your hike. The path winds through broadleaf and subtropical forests, with diverse plant life along the way. While the initial part of the trail is relatively easy, the final stretch involves navigating rocky terrain and crossing streams, sometimes over large boulders. This more adventurous section requires some agility and caution, especially during or after heavy rainfall. Despite the challenging sections, the reward is well worth the effort, as you'll likely find yourself enjoying the falls with few other visitors around.
