Ogosha Shrine, a hidden gem in Yufuin, offers a tranquil retreat centered around a majestic, ancient Japanese cedar. Located a short distance from Yufuin Station, the shrine provides a serene contrast to the town's lively atmosphere. As you approach Ogosha Shrine, you'll walk along narrow lanes winding through traditional houses, gradually ascending towards the forest. The path leads to stone steps that mark the entrance, guarded by stone-carved guardian dogs, inviting you into the sacred space. The highlight of Ogosha Shrine is undoubtedly the giant cedar tree. Estimated to be over 1,000 years old, this tree has a commanding presence, with a thick trunk and towering height. It has been designated as a natural monument by the national government. A large hole on the tree's rear side is a reminder of a past fire. The shrine itself is small and simple, adding to the feeling of being immersed in nature. The quiet atmosphere of the forest enhances the spiritual experience, making it a unique destination. Ogosha Shrine is part of Unagihime Shrine, the main shrine for Yufuin. While Yufuin is known for its hot springs and art scene, Ogosha Shrine offers a different perspective, a place of quiet contemplation and natural beauty.
