Discover more about La Hougue Bie Museum

La Hougue Bie Museum offers a unique and thought-provoking experience, inviting visitors to explore Jersey's rich history from the Neolithic period to the German Occupation of World War II. The site's centerpiece is one of Europe's finest passage graves, dating back 6,000 years, providing insight into the island's Neolithic community. This ancient chamber, aligned with the rising sun during the spring and summer equinoxes, was a sacred space for rituals and ceremonies. Visitors can descend into the passage grave and experience the atmosphere of this ancient site. Above the prehistoric mound, a 16th-century Christian chapel offers spectacular views. The site also features a replica Neolithic Longhouse, constructed using traditional methods, offering a glimpse into life in the New Stone Age. Knowledgeable volunteers are often on hand to discuss the construction and life during that era. La Hougue Bie also houses a German command bunker from World War II, which serves as a memorial to the forced workers brought to Jersey during the occupation. This poignant exhibit tells the stories of these individuals and the islanders who risked their lives to help them. The museum also displays an archaeology and geology collection, including the world's largest Celtic coin hoard, Le Câtillon II. La Hougue Bie's name由来 is thought to come from the Jèrriais/Norman language, with 'hougue' meaning mound. The origin of 'Bie' is less certain. Over the centuries, the site has evolved, with a chapel built on the mound in the 12th century and later additions in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. In the late 18th century, Philippe d'Auvergne constructed Prince's Tower, which was later demolished in 1924. La Hougue Bie is more than just a museum; it's a place where you can connect with the past and appreciate the layers of history that have shaped Jersey.
