Car
If you're traveling by car within Altyn Emel National Park, start from the main entrance of the park. Drive towards the Park's administrative center which is around 40 km from the entrance. Continue on the main road towards the Dzhungarskiy Alatau area. The total drive should take approximately 1 hour. Make sure to have a GPS or a detailed map since the roads can be unmarked in some sections. Upon reaching the coordinates QPRV+975, Zhetysu (44.790892, 78.7432224), you will find yourself at the foot of the Dzhungarskiy Alatau mountains. There are no tolls on this route, but ensure your vehicle is in good condition as some roads may be rough.
Public Transportation
To reach Dzhungarskiy Alatau via public transport, you can take a bus from the nearest city, which is Almaty. From Almaty, take a bus to the town of Kegen. Buses depart regularly from the Sayakhat Bus Station. The bus ride takes about 3-4 hours and costs approximately 1,500 KZT. Once in Kegen, you will need to hire a taxi or find a local guide to take you to the Dzhungarskiy Alatau area. The taxi ride from Kegen to the coordinates QPRV+975 will cost around 3,000-5,000 KZT and takes roughly 1 hour. Confirm the price with the driver beforehand.
Hiking
For those looking to hike into the Dzhungarskiy Alatau, start from the nearest accessible point which is the administrative center of Altyn Emel National Park. From there, you can take marked trails that lead into the foothills of Dzhungarskiy Alatau. Ensure you have proper hiking gear and sufficient water. It's recommended to hire a local guide for safety and navigation, which will typically cost around 10,000 KZT for a day. The hike can take several hours depending on your pace and the trail you choose.
