Car
If you are driving, take the A-1 highway from the city of Balkhash towards the east. Continue on the A-1 for about 100 kilometers until you reach the town of Shakhtinsk. From Shakhtinsk, follow the signs for the Ile-Balkhash nature preserve, which is approximately 20 kilometers south. The route is well marked, and you will pass through scenic landscapes as you approach the preserve. Be cautious of wildlife on the road, especially during early morning and late evening hours.
Public Transportation
To reach Ile-Balkhash via public transportation, start by taking a bus or minibus from Balkhash to Shakhtinsk. Buses run regularly, and the fare is approximately 1,500 KZT. The journey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Once you arrive in Shakhtinsk, you will need to hire a taxi to take you the final 20 kilometers to the Ile-Balkhash nature preserve. Agree on the fare beforehand, which should be around 3,000 to 4,000 KZT. Make sure to ask the driver to take you directly to the preserve entrance.
Bike
For an adventurous option, consider biking from Balkhash to Ile-Balkhash. The total distance is about 120 kilometers. Start on the A-1 highway and enjoy the scenic route. Make sure to carry enough water and snacks, as there are limited stops along the way. Plan for a full day of biking, and consider camping near the preserve if you wish to explore further.
