Getting there

Car Rental

If you are renting a car in the Kilimanjaro Region, start your journey from Moshi. Take the B1 road towards Arusha, then follow signs to the A104 road heading to the border with Uganda. Once you reach the border at Lwakhakha, you will need to go through immigration. Ensure you have your passport and any required visas ready. After crossing into Uganda, continue on the road until you reach the town of Mbale. From Mbale, follow the signs to Mount Elgon National Park, which is approximately 45 kilometers away. The drive from Moshi to Mount Elgon may take about 5 to 6 hours depending on traffic and border crossing times. Make sure to fuel up your vehicle and keep some local currency for tolls or small purchases along the way.

Public Transportation (Matatu)

To use public transportation, head to the Moshi bus station and look for a matatu (shared taxi) heading towards Mbale or the border with Uganda. The fare will typically be around 15,000 to 20,000 TZS per person. Make sure to confirm with the driver that they will take you to the border. Once you reach the border at Lwakhakha, you will need to go through immigration. After clearing immigration, take another matatu from the Ugandan side that goes to Mbale. Again, confirm the destination with the driver. Once in Mbale, you can find local transport options to Mount Elgon National Park, which is about 45 kilometers away. You can hire a private taxi from Mbale or look for local buses that head to the park.

Private Taxi

For a more comfortable and direct option, consider hiring a private taxi. You can arrange this through your hotel in Moshi or a local travel agency. The taxi will take you directly from your location in Moshi to Mount Elgon National Park. This option is more expensive, with costs typically ranging from $100 to $150 depending on your negotiation skills and the service provider. The journey will take approximately 5 to 6 hours, and the driver will assist you with border crossing requirements.

Bicycle Rental

For the adventurous traveler, consider renting a bicycle in Moshi and cycling to Mount Elgon. This option is best for those who are physically fit and experienced in long-distance cycling. You would follow the same route as if you were driving, taking the B1 road towards Arusha, then the A104 to the border.
