Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car, start from Moshi, a common base for climbers. Drive south on the A23 highway towards Arusha. After approximately 30 km, turn left onto the Mweka Road (also known as the Kilimanjaro Park Road). Continue on Mweka Road for about 10 km until you reach the Mweka Gate entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. Here, you'll need to pay the park entry fees, which can range from $70 to $100 per person depending on the season and the duration of your stay. After completing the registration process, continue driving to the Mweka Camp, where many climbers start their hike to Uhuru Peak.

• Public Transportation

  For those using public transportation, take a dala-dala (local minibus) from Moshi to Mweka Village. The ride typically takes about 30 minutes and costs around 1,500 TZS (approximately $0.65). From Mweka Village, you can either hire a taxi or walk approximately 6 km to the Mweka Gate of Kilimanjaro National Park. Make sure to carry enough cash for the park entry fees (ranging from $70 to $100 per person). After entering the park, you can join a guided group or trek independently towards Uhuru Peak, following the Mweka Trail.

• Hiking

  Once at Mweka Gate, you will begin your hike. The trail to Uhuru Peak is well-marked and typically takes 4-6 days, depending on your pace and acclimatization. The hike involves a series of camps: Mweka Camp, Barranco Camp, and High Camp (Kilimanjaro Summit Camp). Ensure you are prepared for altitude changes and bring appropriate gear. Make sure to have a guide or join a guided group, as independent trekking is not allowed in the park. Note that additional costs for guides and porters should be anticipated, which can range from $200 to $500 depending on the level of service.
