Getting there

Matatu

From the center of Kisumu, head to the main bus station located in the central business district. Look for a matatu heading towards Nyalenda. The fare is typically around 50-100 KES. Inform the driver or conductor that you wish to get off at Lake Victoria. The journey will take approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on traffic. Once you arrive at the Nyalenda area, ask to be dropped off near VP3J+V3, which is close to the lake.

Bicycle

If you prefer cycling, you can rent a bicycle from one of the rental shops in Kisumu. Start from the city center and head south towards the lakeshore. Follow the road signs leading to Lake Victoria. The distance is about 5 km from the city center to the lake, and the ride is quite scenic, passing through local neighborhoods. Ensure you have a map or GPS, and be cautious of traffic as you navigate through the streets.

Walking

For the adventurous traveler, walking to Lake Victoria is possible. Start from Kisumu's central business district and follow the roads leading south. Head towards the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary for a more nature-oriented route. Continue until you reach the lakeshore. This walk is approximately 5 km and will take about an hour. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated, as it can be hot during the day.

Boda Boda (Motorcycle Taxi)

Another quick option is to use a boda boda. You can find them throughout Kisumu; simply wave one down or ask at your accommodation for a recommendation. Negotiate the fare before starting your journey. The ride to the lake should take around 15 minutes, and you can ask the rider to drop you off at VP3J+V3 near Lake Victoria.
