Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you are traveling by car from Lake Turkana, you can head towards Lodwar via the main road. Start on the road leading south from the lake and look for signs indicating 'Lodwar'. The distance is approximately 100 kilometers and should take around 2 to 3 hours depending on road conditions. Be cautious of wildlife and other vehicles, and ensure your vehicle has enough fuel, as fuel stations can be sparse.
Public Transportation (Matatus)
To reach Lodwar via public transportation, you can take a matatu (shared minibus) from nearby towns around Lake Turkana, such as Loiyangalani or Kalokol. Check for matatus heading directly to Lodwar; the journey can take approximately 2 to 4 hours, depending on the route and stops. It is advisable to ask locals for the latest schedules and costs, as they can vary. Expect to pay around 500 to 800 Kenyan Shillings for the ride.
Bicycle or Walking
For the adventurous, biking or walking to Lodwar can be an option. However, this is only recommended for experienced travelers due to the long distance and harsh conditions. From Lake Turkana, you would follow the same route as by car, but be prepared for a journey of several hours or even days. Ensure you have enough water, food supplies, and sun protection, as the area can be very hot and dry.
